Here Come The iPad Knock-Offs
No one knows if Apple’s upcoming media tablet will succeed in the market place, but several chinese companies are already preparing low-cost alternatives to the iPad. Such knock-offs are known as “bandit” devices in China and many are manufactured in the southern city Shenzhen.
One such manufacturer is TESO, which plans to ship a 10 inch tablet with multi-touch screen running Windows 7. While the cheapest iPad will set consumers back $500, PC WORLD is reporting the Teso will cost $280 in the US. Other companies planning tablets that will hit the market soon are Hanvon Technology and Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial. The largest PC manufacturer in China, Lenova, who bought out IBM, are also promising a laptop with a detachable touch screen that can be used as a tablet.
The availability of low cost tablets might have a strong affect on the future of paid digital content, an issue being hotly anticipated (and debated) in publishing circles.
