That conversation on Stuart Immonen's website is very interesting. Also interesting is Mark Evanier's commentary on it here .

I love Immonen's work, so his respect for Colletta's work carries a lot of weight with me. However, Mark Evanier is the most credible source on almost any topic, and especially in regards to Kirby his version of events is the one to believe, even if you disagree with his aesthetic judgements.

Quote:
Mark Evanier, from the link above: Lastly, based on my mail and a few comments on websites, I guess I didn't make it clear: Kirby, as editor of his DC books, fired Colletta as the inker because (a) Colletta was a security leak, showing the work around the Marvel offices, (b) Colletta was leaving things out and taking too many shortcuts for Jack and (c) Colletta basically told Jack that for what he was being paid, he would not put more effort into the work. And I guess there was also (d) — Jack wanted an inker who would take direction from him instead of those in the New York office. Mike Royer, who replaced Vinnie, was everything Jack wanted.

What's going to happen when Rich Johnston finds out his true identity? Will Rich publish it or keep it to himself, Ben Urich style?
Well, technically he's a reporter so 9 times out of 10 he will only print half of what was said in order to create a sensational headline.

So--you fear coming out as being a fan of an artist whose work you admire because you're afraid there would be repercussions? That's fucked up on more levels than I can articulate.

As long as Marvel Artist doesn't say anything incriminating, although the "I need my job" line sounds juvenile or naive. Anyway, this mystery could make the Hobgoblin storyline look like a lame scooby and scrappy doo short.

We were talking about art here, right? I think that this thread is over.

Give him points for trying, tho.

(On the other hand, instead of "Marvel Artist" he should try "Wizard Drone" or somesuch. If he's going to pull stunts like that, I mean. Maybe "Marvel Assistant Editor"? "Dandidio"?)

Close, Tuck...you almost hit the nail on the head.

An inker from the midwest, after obtaining an apartment across the river in NJ (not NYC but still not cheap) was sent packing for participating in comic book talk lists (under his own name).

Anyway, I already said that I was a doofus, I don't need you guys to tell me.

It has been an interesting discussion, Marvel Artist, and you are under no obligation to reveal your name. Most of us don't either.

Who?

The reason I ask is--because I think it would be beneficial to all of us to know what went on and why. That seems really odd to me.

But--whatever--keep your own secrets. There are a lot of people here that use pseudonyms. And a few who don't--like confirmed Colletta enthusiast Paul Smith who has posted on boards for years and always seems to keep pretty active in the comic book community.
