Is Keenspot cool, or not cool?

That, at any rate, is the subject of this week's poll at talkaboutcomics.com. I have an opinion, but I won't share it until the results are in (grin).

Silly digital comics talk show host! If we were COOL, we would've named the company COOLspot, not KEENspot.

I see Keenspot as Richie Cunningham, and COMICSOVIET as The Fonz. Aayyy!

(grin).

I was going to make the question: "Keenspot -- Keen or Not Keen?" but that was way too confusing-like.

So far, "cool" is in the lead, by the way.

*shrug* I think I haven't given Keenspot enough of a chance probably. But there's one primary reason for it. I have a finite amount of time to look at other comics online.

Most of the comics I read that are Keenspot comics are comics I was reading before they were Keenspot comics. While it isn't the case across the board, most of them take longer to load now that they are Keen. I am spoiled, because I have constant T-1 access, so when a site loads slowly it generally is not an issue on my end. Keen sites almost consistantly load slower than any other comic sites I go to. I don't know if it is as apparent at 56k, where the majority of people are, but that's my main beef.

On the occasion that I have gone to other Keen comics than my regulars (Bobbins, Ashfield Online, Cool Cat Studios, Pentasmal, and When I Grow Up), I have found it to be as others on this board put it. Some suck, some don't. There are a lot of them where the artwork is superb but the writing is subpar, but the same can be said for any group of online comics. My own writing totally blew when I started it out (I fell into the old "I'll do a lot of inside jokes for my friends and others will instantly love it too" thing).

Anyway, I'll give Keenspot's comics another try someday when things are very slow at work, but between working 40 hours, going to school, having a wife, and doing my own online comics, I would just rather have Goats load fast and give me a quick bit of fun than wait five to ten times as long for a Keenspot.

I think my two cents is up.

I say "Cool" -- Keenspot, in addition to hosting scads of excellent comics, is about the only collective effort that even offers a chance for profits to the creators. Also, through Keenspace, they give ANYONE a chance to try their hand at comics creation -- that's a pretty swell thing to do.

Hmmm... looks like "cool" is winning by a comfortable margin.

I've seen a lot of anti-Keen sentiment on the Comicon boards and elsewhere, but in my dirty little mind I suspect that most of it is sour grapes. Instead of griping about how Keen is stealing their page hits, non-Keen cartoonists should be learning from the Keen business model: cooperate, conglomerate, and cross-promote. Complaining doesn't do any good. And I'm speaking as a cartoonist whose strip was rejected by Keenspot (or, at least, not accepted, as Keen doesn't officially reject strips) ages ago.
