Watchmen and Stuck Rubber Baby tie for first with me.
Stuff I have on my best books shelf: Kabuki: Circle of Blood Cages Various Usagi Various Concrete Various Paradox Mysteries from DC Comics Understanding Comics Palestine Tintin
As for currently interesting stuff -- I really like Grist's Kane series. Great book length story lines. Also enjoying Lone Wolf and Cub, but man, those are small books.

"Dirty Pair: Sim Hell," original B&W version by Adam Warren. I've already destroyed 2 copies of it reading it so much (have a pristine signed one in a short box in the closet). Also the "Gloom Cookie" GN by Serena Valentino et. al. And my Japanese import copy of Shirow's "Ghost in the Shell," which I can't read very well, the pages are in reverse order (read right to left), but it's got the entire story which didn't seem to make it to America - the stuff I've seen published in English only represents about 1/6 of what's in this book. Oh yeah, and Joe Matt's "The Poor Bastard." Awesome. And Charles Burns' "El Borbah." Love that one. Um, and "Star Wars: Dark Empire I and II." Lots of great stuff out there, yep. After Watchmen I'd say Campbell's Alec: The King Canute Crowd G. Hernandez' Human Diastrophism J. Hernandez' Death of Speedy and Wig Wam Bam Campbell's Alec: How to be an Artist Moore & Campbell's From Hell Miller & Sienkiewicz' - Elektra Assassin & Shadowplay: The Secret Team Campbell's Bacchus stuff (Doing the Islands is probably my favorite) Miller's Dark Knight Returns Miller & Mazzuchelli's Batman: Year One

Ah, The Barry Ween trades crack me up, great for when I'm in a pissy mood. I just got back into collecting comics last year after a 10 year layoff, so the Preacher trades were a great read, and I dunno if it counts as a trade, but I loved The Killing Joke

"normalman: The Novel" (the SLG collection) is up there.
Also, damn near any "Cerebus" story arcs. ("High Society" stands out.)

VOID INDIGO One of the "original" graphic novels from Marvel, circa Summer 1984. Ongoing Epic series that September...cancelled due to violence after 2 issues. Crazy, when you consider that the violence in that book back then, is commonstance today if not even MORE so in books like, say...X-MEN. Bring back VOID INDIGO!!! Oh yeah...and JEREMY BROOD by Richard Corben was cool too. ------------------ http://www.timespell.com

One of my favorites that I don't think has been mentioned is Through the Habitrails by Jeff Nicolson.

if we're talking "original" GNs... as opposed to reprints, i guess my faves are/were:
kyle baker's COWBOY WALLY SHOW THE DEATH OF CAPT. MARVEL (i, was young, it was good) DETECTIVES, INC. (the marshall rogers one)
there are tons more that have already been mentioned: chunky rice, from hell, etc... but those above were some of the first ones i found growing up.. & i guess they made an impression
