my current reading list:
akiko (all-ages fantasy fun in the tradition of windsor mccay) astro city (need i say more?) the authority (the comic equivalent of ''a widescreen crackhead action movie'') cerebus (the best comic on the planet, bar none. you'll need to do a lot of catching up, but boy is it worth it!) faith (ted mckeever's metropol is back... kind of... yay!) forty winks (as per akiko, but different) geeksville (pokin' fun at fanboys without losing that fanboy spirit) kane (a funny crime noir comic? you bet!) knights of the dinner table (if you've ever played dungeons & dragons, you must read this; absolutely hilarious) mage ('nuff said?) planetary (x-men meet the x-files) rising stars (j. michael straczynski's deconstruction of superheroes... fans of watchmen, etc., should try this) sheba (the adventures of the mummy of cleopatra's pet cat, trying to get to the afterlife) tellos (the swords-and-sorcery comic for people who hate swords-and-sorcery comix... lighthearted fun) whiteout: melt (edge-of-your-seat antarctic mystery/thriller)
pick whichever of these you think no-one's reading.

As far as books that no one reads goes, I think that I'd certainly have to say 100 BULLETS. It's an amazing title. Every few issues, someone new who has been severly screwed in life by someone else gets a chance to even the score. This being done with a mysteriously untracable gun and total carte blanch.

The following list sort of relates to the idea of "comics nobody's reading," but it started because a friend o' mine keeps twitting me about not buying enough "alternative" stuff. I have claimed that I sample probably as much as he does, and this list, of stuff I've bought within the last half-year or so, and enjoyed at least somewhat. I'm focusing mostly on lesser known titles that might make some claim to being "cutting-edge" in some way, so I'm leaving out straight comedy (GROO), non-superhero adventure (the nicely-drawn MYSTIC FOR HIRE) and the Really Famous Alternatives like CEREBUS, SIP and XENOZOIC. In alphabetical order, they are: BIRTH CAUL // CRUEL & UNUSUAL // DORK // EVIL EYE // FLEENER // HORRIBLE TRUTH ABOUT COMICS // HORROR OF COLLIER COUNTY // LOVELY PRUDENCE LOVE STREET // LUBA (well, it's not famous as an individual title!!) // MURDER BY CROWQUILL // MYTHOGRAPHY // NON // PENNY CENTURY // SCHIZO // SHUT UP AND DIE // SPANK THE MONKEY // STRANGE KISS // TRANQUILIZER // URBAN HIPSTER. Also bought that thing where all the characters look like playing cards... and will look at anything from B. Kanan or Metaphrog. (THE MAZE, from a couple years back, is for this mythophile a much-better meditation on Dionysian deity than another comic I could name but won't...

Read Age of Bronze and do the industry a favor by keeping this book alive! It is a terrific telling of the Trojan War with accessible art and writing.

Zero Zero was so good that nobody read it enough to keep it alive. Ditto Trailer Trash and Villa of the Mysteries, and The Jam.

The NIMROD by Lewis Trondheim. A narrow minded audience and poor publicity have kept this book from the throng it deserves.
The McConey graphic novels The Hoodoodad and Harum Scarum, also by Trondheim, with the same lamentable circumstances.
SUCKLE by Dave Cooper. Another unjustly overlooked graphic novel.
Tales from the Great Unknown by Aaron Augenblick. Unusual book shape and the obscurity of self-publication have kept this work from finding a bigger audience.
Really good manga. Since 99% of what gets translated is mystical sci-fi, chosen-one, jewel quest type stuff, we have barely scratched the surface, content-wise. To name one, there is a sharp little series of Tezuka's best short stories currently out in Japanese. I'd love to see a nice translation of these.

Timothy: I think Kim T. said somewhere that FBI will be publishing at least one more issue of The Nimrod, which'll make you and me and 3 other people happy.
The Theater of Cruelty (FBI) by Marc Tessier and Alexandre Lafleur is highly recommended by me. DO your eyeballs and brain a favour and pick this up.

I'm pretty sure that two issues of The Nimrod will be coming out next year. More importantly, go buy Lewis Trondheim's McConey books (English translations of his Lapinot series) from Fantagraphics so that they can afford to put out the rest of them. good stuf! And for those of you who can't read French, Trondheim has a silent graphic novel called La Mouche ("The Fly") that is really good. ------------------ Jared Smith jared@marsimport.com owner Mars Import www.marsimport.com "Quality Earth comics"
