Fantagraphics Books is proud to announce that The Complete Peanuts 1950-1952 will hit The New York Times Hardcover Bestsellers list next week, debuting at #19 on the May 23, 2004 list. It marks the first New York Times Bestseller in the company's 28 year history. The bestseller list news comes on the heels of a slew of publicity surrounding the series over the last few weeks, including raves reviews from NPR, CNN, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, TIME MAGAZINE, USA TODAY, THE NEW YORK TIMES, SPIN, THE WASHINGTON POST, NATIONAL POST OF CANADA, TIME OUT NEW YORK, and many more!

What the critics are saying about THE COMPLETE PEANUTS 1950-1952:

"An extraordinary publishing project." — TIME

"[A] heroic project.... Grade: 'A'." — ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

"The ultimate blockhead." — NEW YORK TIMES

"A treat." — PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (STARRED REVIEW)

"Consider replacing those tattered old Peanuts paperbacks with this definitive series." — BOOKLIST

"As essential as pop texts get." — THE ONION

"If comics publishing worked like the fashion industry, Fantagraphics' The Complete Peanuts would surely be the event of the Spring season. We'll have to settle for calling it a milestone, and a long overdue one at that." — PHILADELPHIA CITY PAPER

"Calvin and Hobbes, Zits, Mutts and Get Fuzzy all owe a debt to Schulz's extraordinary creation that began so simply, 54 years ago." — SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"Now that Schulz is gone, the comic strip he drew for 50 years looks more eccentric and ingenious all the time." — WASHINGTON POST

"A worthwhile tribute to the talent and imagination of one of the greatest artists of our time." — ANIMATION MAGAZINE

"Even the most demanding Peanuts fan couldn't ask for more." — COMICS BUYERS GUIDE

Not surprising. The collection's fantastic. Hell, it would have been worth buying the essay and interview at the back alone.

Yah, the interview, really strange to read Schulz's comments that Superman doesn't fly, he jumps over buildings, ain't it?

I bought the first one, AND I LOVE IT. Schulz's is truly the master of the simple gag, and his panels often have a real emotional impact.

Congrats to Gary Groth and company.

That's funny, I'm buying both of those books first thing tomorrow. Synchronicity!

Well, I WANT to buy both of those books tomorrow, but, darn it, I can't afford 'em right now. But, of course, I've flipped through both of them in the store - lovely stuff. Congrats to everyone at Fantagraphics on a job well done!

Yeah, I guess a complete Peanuts set is nice, but Fantagraphics should focus on more important work, like a complete Garfield collection. That cat eats so much! He’s crazy!

It's nice to see Fantagraphics making money on something besides porn (not that I have a problem with porn, mind you).

I think it's incredibly cool that Fantagraphics got the rights from the Shutlz estate to release these. I'll have to pick one up as soon as I get the spare $$.
