I dug Hepcats when Antarctic started reprinting them and then Martin Wagner dissapeared. I heard not even Antarctic Press knew how to get a hold of him. I've only heard bits and pieces of what happened to him since this happened, so's howsabout fillin' me in?

I'm pretty sure that he got too close to the edge, lost his balance, and the result was one of those tragic accidents that are all too common. When will these kids learn.

If he only dropped as far as the shoulders of the earth, maybe he can climb back.

I'm also a San Antonio resident. My main comics shopping location is EXCALIBUR COMICS, which is owned by the guys that run Antarctic Press. I've asked this same question of the staff there... what happened to Martin? Apparently, he's been busy with film work. One of the guys told me that he was tapped to storyboard a movie by Robert Rodriguez, and that on his spare time he (Martin) was working on putting together either a short movie, or an independent movie. A friend of mine confirmed this for me (he saw Martin at a book con within the last year, or year and a half), and got his number. Hope this answers some of your questions!

gracias,all. I too, frequent Excalibur Comics. I don't know why the question didn't occur to me during one of my visits there. I've even been there when Ben Dunn (Antarctic publisher) himself was there...huhn.

The last I heard of Martin Wagner, he'd posted a long screed about how people just weren't supporting his book and it was the fans' fault for not rallying behind it, so he was leaving comics.

(Nevermind that he couldn't finish 4-page back-ups for the Antarctic Press reprints of #1-12, or that he constantly took money from people and never delivered product.)

I enjoyed HEPCATS a great deal, but I can't help but feel that Wagner's troubles were ones that were, for the most part, self-inflicted.
