We have for many years donated books to Libraries, Hospitals, Schools and the Literacy Volunteers of America. Never received a tax break because we just reduced inventory levels. Others would have more lattitude than us on their donations vis-a-vis write-offs, and all are worthy causes

Howard, you're not getting all tangled up in this are you? And what happened to the offer of people getting replies via email, as was said several times? Of course they don't have that status. Of course Rick got embarrassed by it all. Of course it would still be simple for anyone to 'splain away all the confusion in about three sentences. But that wouldn't be half as interesting. I'm not incurious! Well, I'm not sure how much expose this would be. I had contacted RICK a few months back about doing a feature on ORCA: what they did, what success they were having, etc. Apparently he had lost (or never received) my initial questions. I resent the list--and since the tax status was up in the air at that time, threw that question in as well. I'm sure I'll hear back from RICK on that soon, if it's not in my inbox already. But while I'm writing, I'd be interested in speaking to anybody who has donated to ORCA in the past. My email is in my profile info above. ------------------ Howard Price Staff Writer TheComicStore.com

In other words, RICK is full of it again, and simply taking advantage by doing something something he forgot to do months ago.
What EVER!!!

(emphasis mine)
Well, now it's been decided for you then huh:
"A full expose on ORCA's present tax status will be outlined by Howard Price via an interview with me."
I'd like to take this opportunity to say that Howard will be interviewing Kip Leprosy and ORCAV as well. Also, he'll be extending a 50% discount to everyone whose name begins with a consonant.

Okay, I didn't speak directly with Rick Olney this past weekend at Toronto, mainly because I never ran into him, but I talked with Mary S, who's ORCA's marketing person, and here's the deal:
They are still in the process of getting their 501(c)3 tax status, but do not have it yet. As anyone who's done the paperwork for this knows, applying can be a pretty long process. She hopes to hear good news soon, but as of right now ORCA is not yet a 501(c)3 tax-exempt corporation.
However, they have forged some sort of partnership with the Salvation Army (Empire chapter, I think she called it, that deals with the NY area), so if you donate any comic books you should donate them c/o the Salvation Army and, as someone else in this thread noted, that is tax-deductible.
Hope this helps, if only a little.

I would just like to say one thing. WHAT THE FUCK? YOU'VE ALL BEEN TALKING ABOUT DONATING TO SOME FUCKING ORGANIZATIONS OR ANOTHER FOR 3 PAGES NOW! Now that the ommitient voice of reason (OVR is an NPO if asked) is done, I think you all can agree, this is ridiculous, or in the words of dracula, ridicoolus. The real topics is organized readers and how they help you, not NPO's, so fuck the NPO's and stay on the subject matter!

The topic was "Organized Readers", by which Rick meant "Organized Readers of Comics Associated" or ORCA. And no, he's not me.
It's a shame Rick couldn't just say that his group would have full legal not-for-profit status in the near furture.

Fucillium, speaking of staying on topic, this is the second thread in a row I have wasted my time looking at just to find out the only new post was from you, blasting people for being "off topic", when you are the only one who is. Get a clue.
P.S. While the occasional F-Bomb is certainly not a topside felony, you should probably save profanity-laden tirades for the Gutters.

"It's a shame RICK couldn't just say that his group would have full legal not-for-profit status in the near future."
Isn't it, though? He could've easily dispelled all this brouhaha by being honest and forthcoming, but those are not traits you'll find exhibited by pathological liars.
Regarding Elayne's post above and the "explanation" from ORCA's marketing person, if one wishes to donate comics to the Salvation Army, what the hell would one need ORCA for? The answer remains elusive.
