>>Worst of all, is that nobody could put him in his place.<<

Nah, Warren's a good guy. He just likes to stir things up is all, keep things interesting. The goal shouldn't be to put him in his place, but to state your case despite any "smackdown attitude" you may be getting from him or the other WEF locals. Just ignore it and stick to the facts as you see them.

Well, it doesn't matter now anyway. WEF is gone. If I want to debate Warren, I'll have to go to the Comics Pro board or the Super Lime station.

And Warren wasn't ripping off Hunter S. Thompson. He was ripping off Doonsebury. wink

His disastrous, embarassing argument with Steve Bissette (which Ellis deleted all but the most pro-Ellis comments of) proved that pretty definitively.

The WEF could certainly be very like minded. But I think Tom is correct in stateing this isn't a rare thing on the internet. I often disagreed with the majority there, but was never flamed when I posted my disagreement. I considered it a valuable site and will definitely shed a tear for its passing.

Another thing - the WEF was not an online community.

Anybody not convinced that the WEF was a cult of personality built around Ellis? That it consisted of people who hated each other and wanted to hurt each other? Then take a look at the spinoff forums that have popped up. They've seperated into cliques and are now saying the most hateful, spiteful things about each other. The gay Brits hate the straight-talking Americans, the American men hate female creators, the female creators as usual hate everybody... it's damn entertaining for those of us who are just enjoying the spectacle.

Ellis is a shrewd guerilla marketer and manager of his own career. Ultimately I believe the forum was an exercise in building a readymade marketplace for his work, and given the launch numbers for Global Freqency, a successful one.

Still for all the naysaying about super-heroes and elevating the artform, his creator owned works are still genre fiction. It'd be like pointing at the Power Rangers as bad TV, then running off and making Stargate SG-1 rather than Twin Peaks.

As for his work I read several issues of Transmetropolitan, and found it heavy handed and yes, a rip off of Dr. Thompson. Authority was mildly entertaining. I do adore Planetary.

You can be a community and a cult of personality. That's how we got Utah.
