Heck, Barks was doing great stuff before I was born.

It took Howard the Duck to be introduced to the great Duck artist. Don Rosa is a worthy successor.

I was fortunate enough to meet John Stanley at a Seuling convention in Philadelphia back in 1977. Very nice man.

What's wrong with you people? The guy decides he wants to stop buying comics and some of you reacting as if something's wrong with that decision. You keep telling him to try this or that book(s) and trying to get him to keep buying comics. WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?

Let him stop. He'll probably be much happier. The kind of comics that Sam likes aren't really being done anymore. They've grown up and evovled into something different. Why should he waste time and money buying something he doesn't like? It sounds like he wants to see the type stories and art done today like they were done years ago. I don't see comics taking that kind of giant step backwards so he might as well get out of the game now.

Maybe it isn't about the way comics are done today. Maybe he's finally out grown them . Things like that happen all the time to healthy normal people. I don't have all the same tastes and interests i had 10 years ago. Maybe Sam has changed. In any case, it's better to stop buying something you don't like than to keep buying it and complaining about the same stuff all the time.

And by the way...Count me as another who thinks today's comics are much better all around than the stuff that came out years ago. I've said this before...When most people start in on how great comics used to be and you ask them to name all those great books they all tend to name the same 8 or so titles. They somehow tend to forget all the other crappy books that came out back then. Only the good stuff stands out in their minds. Overall today's comics blow comics from 10 years ago and back out of the water.

Agreed. I think Sam's reason for quitting his hobby is weird, kind of like if someone vowed to stop watching movies because the James Bond series has been going downhill, but it's his business. Who cares? Hopefully he'll save money and find something else to occupy his time.

Heck, I go through months-long periods of buying few or no comics, until something that interests me comes along. I don't post melodramatic announcements about how the medium has failed me, but the result is about the same.

Exactly. Which is why he should have shut the hell up about it. Because nobody cares.

Stop posting, Sam.

Actually I think its much more like someone saying that they don't want to watch TV anymore because there aren't any good TV Westerns on. I mean if one particular genre is where you find your entertainment, then all the quality in other genres in the medium isn't going to actually be particularly helpful.

I agree about the who cares part; if he wants to or doesn't want to read comics its not really something that matters to anyone other than him; of course the catharsis in the revelation might be important so I suppose I can understand a need share such a decision publicly.

I knew that some who sympathize and there would be some who would have sport with me.
That is the way it is.
Of course, I still read the comics I have, and many I have yet to read.
This could be a phase that I am going through, who knows.
Someday, in the future, I may just pick up a comic that catches my fancy, and the whole thing will start all over again.

Most eveyone I know who read comics got out for awhile. Some came back, others found other avenues of interest. Hopefully you'll find something that you enjoy to do/spend time on one way or the other.
