At the DC message boards, somebody asks if John Byrne is still in the comics industry.

A valid question!

Someone else rushes in to say that of course he is, Byrne is right in the thick of things, he's drawing a Star Trek spin-off mini-series at IDW featuring a young Dr. McCoy.

They still have DC Comics message boards?

It's where the remaining DC fanboys congregate to discuss how kewl teh latest ass-rape was -- and Dumas stops by to torment himself by criticizing DC and getting beaten with sticks, rhetorically.

In fairness to the DC guys, I once met a comics retailer who thought John Byrne was dead. This wasn't that many years ago. As it happens, I think Byrne had just done a 12-issue run on ACTION COMICS with Gail Simone, so he had a higher profile than he had seen in years, but this dude was pretty sure that Byrne died sometime in the 1990s.

To a lot of people, Byrne did X-MEN in the 1970s, FANTASTIC FOUR and ALPHA FLIGHT in the early 1980s, SUPERMAN in the mid-1980s, and then he just sort of fades away with Ronald Reagan.

When you put it that way, he sounds almost Quixotic.

Ass-rape? That joke just won't get old, will it?

Jeez, just cuz Dr. Light likes to do it doggy style doesn't mean he's into anal. JLA is a kid's comic, after all.

In this month's JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL OF ARSENAL, issue no. 3, JLA member Roy Harper responds to the murder of his young daughter and the destruction of Star City, his hometown, and his arm being ripped off by getting stoned to the tits, trying to have sex with his genocidal ex-girlfriend (but he's impotent and can't get it up) and he winds up in an alleyway literally beating a homeless man half to death with a dead cat.

That's in a Justice League of America comic book, guest-starring Batman and Black Canary.

I dunno if that's better or worse than ass-rape, but it's a lot more complicated.

So we'll stick with ass-rape as our shorthand description of modern DC storytelling.
