Which, when pressed, he defines loosely enough that yeah, it applies to most of Moore's output, along with most of Byrne's, and most comics that have ever been published.

Interesting. However, apart from the early part of Moore's run on Swamp Thing, I'm blanking on when he's ever used that particular trick. A gradual reveal, sure, but rarely a complete bait-and-switch.

Like I say, it's a super-loose definition. If I'm remembering right, he's said that Watchmen falls into that category because the superheroes don't act like you think superheroes act. And that Lost Girls falls into it because it uses characters you already know in a new setting and context. Supreme because it inverts what you know about Superman.

Ironically, I think that if you pick it apart, Byrne seems to be struggling to express something like "Moore uses previously existing character archetypes as a metaphor in his stories." Which, yes, is a theme that runs through most of Moore's work. But it's a level of criticism that requires unpacking some layers in Moore's work, and Byrne would very much like to deny that those layers even exist.

Besides Swamp Thing, Miracleman also used that trick. Byrne's criticism may have been apt 25 years ago when he first formulated it, but now not so much.

Moore's got a new miniseries from Avatar called Neonomicon, where he will apparently tell us everything we know about Lovecraft is wrong. I intend to get the TPB, but the preview looked pretty awful. Anybody know if this is another thing "adapted" from Moore, or is he really writing it?

Pretty sure it's an adaptation. I think all the Moore stuff from Avatar is adaptations.

Who do you suppose has more money? Byrne or Moore?

I know Byrne is swimming in it. According to his interview in his Modern Masters volume, he's actually figured this out mathematically. If he stopped working immediately (I know! Some will say he already has!) he could probably live comfortably for about nine years before he'd have to worry about money again. In spite of this, I'd say Moore could probably buy and sell Byrne.

I'm suspicious of everything from Avatar, but they've been claiming for a while that the script for Neonomicon was written especially for artist Jacen Burrows to do. Moore has also said that he was in an especially bad mood when he wrote it. I'm skipping it.

BTW, kinda weird that Bleeding Cool has admitted to becoming a publicity arm of Avatar. What would have induced Rich Johnston to do that? Does Avatar really have that much money to make it worthwhile?

Very sad when someone gets to their breaking point like that and feels the need to kill innocent co-workers. Clearly a very emotionally disturbed individual. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those innocent lives that were lost. All this tragedy because someone cannot deal with the everday stresses of life. Sad.

Hypocrite? Where did that come from?? How does my comment make me a hypocrite? Really, I wanna know. What, I'm not allowed to have feelings for those impacted by the actions of an irrational, emotionally disturbed individual?

Because I'm pro-gun my feelings toward those affected by some nut do not count?

Hard to say.

It's clear that money means everything to Byrne -- he won't do diddley shit unless somebody cuts him a check -- whereas Moore has forfeit millions from movie rights, WATCHMEN sequels and various other deals that he had no interest in.
