[quote=aric shapiro]THAT I've never hear of. Immwank is still a cool enough place, but no longer the free for all that it once was. The place is a victim of its own success. Still, I enjoy checking in on the place from time to time, which fortunately I can still do.
Even with Hugh there?
I got no gripe with Hugh. I think he's an ass, but that's encouraged at Imwank. After I was banned, I learned that Hugh was/is quite sick, and I wish him a speedy recovery and good health. Does anyone here know whether he is doing better?
So IMWAN actually banned YOU? Jeez, that place...
Hugh posted regularly about his heart/health problems. Don't know if he's gotten worse or better. (I can only read threads in the Playroom now.)
One of the reasons I got sick of that place was the endless posting about people being sick, getting injured, losing relatives, having brothers in jail, having autistic children, etc., etc.
Call me an a-hole (cuz I am), but having to post condolences every other minute (and having to read them) was a little tiresome. As I don't personally know anyone on that board, I have no desire for that sort of involvement. I was just there for s hits and giggles, not personal drama.
But it wasn't just the endless soap opera. A lot of people over there are just self-important jerks.
The Island of Misfit Toys, I call it. But what do you expect from a message board created by and populated with those banned from the JBF?
You have to understand that Imwank is a place where people really bonded with one another, so more casual posters are viewed as outsiders. For those that are a "part" of the place, there is a sesne of belonging. I thought the place was a hoot, some fresh air after repressive boards that stealth banned and created de facto rules. What I didn't expect was that folks at Imwank expect casual posters to be in the know----to know what is going on on every page of a thread, even if the thread has dozens of pages, to keep track of who is who, and who has what. I darted in and out of the place, usually after Byrne posted art because I wanted to see folks reactions to the commissions. While the Byrne forum was not(nor should it be) the place to really critique art, Imwank foolk spoke their mind about the art, which I found refreshing. Some folks there just plain didn't like me and attacked me on a regular basis. Hugh was such a person, at least as I recall. I got fed up one day and actually defended myself and was banned for it. That's funny because the gripe a lot of folk there had with me was the fact that I "tolerated" alleged abuse from John Byrne. Anyway, the pretext used to ban me was that EVERYONE knew that Hugh was sick, so how dare I make fun of him. The REALITY is that I had no idea that Hugh was sick. All I knew was that he had complained of tendinitis. Bam, I was banned. See at Imwank, everything goes until it doesn't. A bloke like me can be abused every day, and that is a-ok, but the second I shoot back, BAN BAN BAN! It is cool though. I wish Hugh well. I certainly do not want to see anyone suffer. Life is too short, too precious. Imwank isn't for everyone, but for some peeople, it a great fit.
