Another neat anecdote, regarding a cool Byrne panel from Avengers West Coast #42, captioned "Even the lunatic whirligig of the training mount cannot phase the man called Hawkeye." Originally I had drawn that scene with Clint just standing on the ground, firing at multiple targets. Then something kicked in, in the back of my brain, and I thought "No! I am back at Marvel now! This has to be WILD!"
And with that thought came the realization that, in my time at DC, quite unconsciously, I had been struck with whatever it was that seemed to compel DC writers and artists to tone things down.
GAH!!!

Jim Shooter has been posting some interesting stuff about Byrne recently as apparently, Marvel had some discussions with Warner's about taking over Superman in the 80s and Byrne, unprompted, gave Shooter an 8 page synopsis for a Marvel take on Superman. Shooter doesn't show the whole plot but comments on it extensively. The comments get interesting and one of them by Garu, I think explains a lot. He quotes an unnamed inker who work with Byrne who said regarding Byrne, "I've never met a less happy person in my life." I thought it was quite sad.

Paul, sorry if I came off as patronizing. I freely admit that I wrote mostly for my own amusement and not for anyone else's edification. And I stated repeatedly that what I was doing was quibbling, a waste of time, and an interminable mess. Not necessarily any sort of mess. And no need to apologize. You're stating your opinion & there's never any need to apologize for that. What I will not do, though, is agree that my statements were worse than what Byrne is doing. Although it may have been patronizing to him, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, assuming ignorance instead of malevolence, which is more than he gives his forum members. I disagree that JB was exhibiting any sort of malevolence to his forum members. So asking "why" is not a legitimate acknowledgment?
Byrne is fond of responding, to posters who disagree with him or who ask him for clarification, by making a brief statement followed by "But you know this." Likewise, all the nonsensically-extended arguments in my post above should have been obvious to Byrne. So by responding "Why?" he shows that he wasn't willing to expend even a second's worth of thought about whether Gary Olson was making a fair point. I disagree. I believe that JB was asking for clarification & Gary Olsen's follow up was apparently all that was necessary. It was only an opinion. He could have said, "Oh yeah, that could be an alternative wording, but Roger Stern just went a different way this time. And by the way, Gary, you're totally quibbling over nothing, just like I was quibbling over nothing in this same thread yesterday. Don't you know that I'm the only one who gets to quibble around here?" Instead, Olson is made to feel that he has offended JB, for which he meekly apologizes: Well, I always thought "comprehend" didn't sound right, and I always wondered if it was a lettering error.
No offence was meant to JB or Roger Stern. I was just curious.
Olson got the message of the stone-faced "Why?" loud and clear. This is where I take issue. This attempt at mind-reading. JB's response did not appear to me to be anything other than a natural response to someone he just may be disagreeing with. While Gary very obviously felt the need to point out that he meant no offense, I don't believe that JB was offended in the least.

Fair enough, Paul, we can certainly agree to disagree here.
As ever, a pleasure doing business with you, sir!

While those two are spooning in the corner over there, I'd like to direct your attention to this fully pencilled sketch: The first thing that hits me is too heavy on the shadowing on cap. The flame isn't that bright. Nitpicky I know. If I was the guy commisioning this I'd accept. I'd shut my mouth and only tell my closest geeks. You guys. <blush> http://www.byrnerobotics.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40186

I don't normally like to take advantage of my position but in this case... if what your implying includes a midget and a donkey...ok.
