Mitt Romney is now 2-for-2 in Iowa and New Hampshire. His chances look good in South Carolina and then Florida.

Evidently, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee is gonna be Mitt Romney. And it was always gonna be Mitt Romney. If you look at the big-picture data on polling and funding, the front runner has been Mitt Romney since last summer.

Yet we kept getting a new "candidate of the week," with all of the requisite profiles, PACs, promises, scandals and campaign meltdowns. Sarah Palin! Michele Bachmann! Rick Perry! Chris Christie! Herman Cain! Newt Gingrich! Rick Santorum! Ron Paul! Why, it could be ANYBODY! It's totally WIDE OPEN! Oh, the DRAMA!

Except ... it really wasn't wide open.

As Dana Milbank writes in the Washington Post, "This year turned out to be a particularly wasteful one in the Granite State. Once Romney won in Iowa, the question was not whether he would win here but by how much. Yet the reporters descended anyway: Our hotel rooms were nonrefundable."

I'm not a religious man by any means, but talk about a real, "there but for the grace of God go I" situation. Chris Christie must thank his lucky stars every time he sees Rick Perry being laughed at by a table full of pundits.

It's going to be hilarious watching all those dumbasses who've been slagging Romeny now have to kiss his backside. It's already hilarious how much ammunition they've given to the president's re-election campaign.

If Rick Perry's debate performances at the start had simply been as good as they are now, he would have mopped the floor with Mitt. It's not a fluke that so many other candidates zoomed by Romney in the polls. He really was that beatable.
