The Beat has reported that comic legend John Severin has passed away at the age of 90.

I loved his work on "Cracked" as a youngster, as a teenager I discovered his wonderful EC and even Marvel work, and he was still producing talented work into his 80s.

The comic community will miss him.

Yeah, he was amazing, even on his later material like the Witchfinder mini just last year.

Severin was a very talented artist. I loved his war stories with Archie Goodwin in BLAZING COMBAT.

In a way, he had unfortunate timing. He came into the prime of his art career just as superheroes began to dominate American comics, and superheroes weren't really his thing. He was a master of war, Western and other genres in which few people seemed particularly interested after the 1950s.

Among my favorite Severin works:

1. Western and War short stories for Warren in the late 60s and 70s.
2. His run on Our Fighting Forces with Bob Kanigher, from around issue 135-150 (just before Kirby.
3. As Lawson mentioned, Blazing Combat.
4. Kull the Conqueror (he inked his sister Marie).

He returned to comics with a vengeance this decade, even though he was in his 80s. He drew Rawhide Kid, Desperadoes, Caper (issues 5-8 of a Judd WInick mini-series), Punisher Max (a one shot called the Tyger, written by Garth Ennis), Bat Lash, and (as Allan said) Witchfinder.

Every piece of Severin artwork I ever saw was nothing short of terrific. He was truly one of the master illustrators of comics.

RIP John, and thanks so much for always giving us high quality work.

John Severin was fantastic. His inking on Herb Trimpe on the Hulk & Dick Ayers on Sgt Fury were particular favourites of mine.

RIP.
