There's a tight-knit group of people putting up projects on Kickstarter recently who are zealots for that particular funding method. They have a social network that all fund each other's projects. The two guys behind this one are some of the biggest stars in this circle, largely an extension of Renae De Liz's Womanthology project that had hundred of contributors and their family members backing it. Without being a part of that circle, one can't expect similar results.

Is Dave Sim part of that network? His Kickstarter seems to be doing pretty well.

But to give a sincere answer to your insincere question, the projects that tend to do the best on Kickstarter are the ones from known quantities. In other words, the people and organizations who should be able to fund any project traditionally. Kickstarter has a screening process on submissions for exactly this reason, to increase the likelihood of their skimming a profit.

I think it's a bit of that but also it helps to be able to show that you can deliver. Our first Kickstart campaign fell short of the goal but we had no product to speak of, just a promise to deliver (and there are stories of people getting funded that don't send the rewards after). Once we had some books under our belt and creators and reviews showing we put out a real product and had real rewards and put out decent comics we hit goals after that.

I try and learn how to put together better projects each time we do one.

What we've tried to do is offer many lower tier rewards (5-25 dollar levels are typically the most popular) which are mainly comics or PDFs and then move up towards sketch covers, original art, rewards just for retailers and then the bigger ones like pro critiques which have always done really well for creators new to the business.

Still not all happy with the video but videos are pretty much a must for any project.
