Saw the midnight show last night and here's my review:
When I was originally asked to go two days earlier, my initial response was no. I'm a creature of habit. I have responsibilities now. I need a good night's sleep in order to function effectively the next day. This means 930 or 10 is light's out for me. But then suddenly, without warning, without any hint, or preview,* my inner geek took hold of me and next thing I know I'm at the midnight show. I'm not going to spoil everything, but I will talk about what I was looking forward to.
There was one key thing I was looking forward to and that is the entrance from Wayne Manor to the bat cave. I watched the first movie and the quote about rebuilding the manor "brick by brick" is pretty goddam accurate. I was hoping against hope that there would be a nod to the tv series where the head is tilted back, the book case slides away to reveal the batpoles to the cave. And really, it makes sense. That's why firemen use those poles. It's the quickest way from point a to point b from a verticle direction. Did this happen? Spoilers:
Yes and no--there were no poles. It was the same <plink plunk plink> on the piano keys that opened to a new and improved elevator to the cave. However, there was another scene where a long book case slides open to reveal an entrance to where all the prototype stuff like more tumblers and other cool gadgets was stored. So, bitter sweet i guess.
As corny as that may sound, I was genuinely looking forward to the new Wayne Manor and how they got from there to the cave more than any thing else except for one thing: How does it all end? Does he live? Does he die?
To be continued...

Just watched DKR, after watching "Batman Begins", "Dark Knight", "Batman" (1989), and "Batman & Robin" (in that order).
"Batman & Robin" is still the worst film with the character.
Otherwise, I'll hold my tongue until I write a full review.

Of the previous four, I've only seen the first one from 1989. I can't imagine anything worse than the two Nolan snoozefests that I've seen.

Weirdly, DKR is probably better written, and especially plotted, than either BB or DK. It suffers, though, because there's nothing even close to Ledger's performance and the thematic depth and intelligence of DK. Nolan has essentially made two very good but very standard super-hero movies sandwiched around an extraordinary story about vigilantism and civilization.

I agree, the twists in the central plot are actually well-structured. But there is a lot of boring shit you have to sit through waiting for the central plot to get going. Cut out all the Gotham Central stuff and this would've been a 2 hour, much better film. My immediate thoughts, mainly concerning violence.

I saw TDKR yesterday, and while I didn't enjoy every bit of it, there was plenty that I did like. And the various twists and plot payoffs at the very end, I found all of that part extremely satisfying, pretty much justifying the whole enterprise.

*To quote a line from Desperado I'll let some other asshole spoil whether he lives or dies. This asshole will tell you that Grant Morrison's Damien has the potential to be introduced if this franchise were to continue. The ending was satisfying and uplifting. It made me want more, and really, that's what you want to do: leave them wanting more. 4.5 Buds out of 5. Obvious points lost for lack of ingenuity for access to the batcave.

I give it an 8.5 The film editing starts off bad because Nolan listened to the complaints and caved in to alter Bane's voice for the first fourth of the film. It comes off like his voice is on a seperate audio track from the rest of the film, which is very noticeable.
The film also suffers from the same thing as Spider-man 3: too much in one film.
Bruce Wayne's attraction to Catwoman and Miranda Tate came off as incredibly rushed. Bruce Wayne's recuperation seems incredibly rushed both times. The first he's shown needing a cane and the doctor tells him he's got brain damage, leg, back problems, all this stuff. Bruce just puts on some kind of exoskeleton on his leg and is back to kick bricks into dust. Then he gets his back messed up by Bane and later some guy in prison just punches his vertebrae back into place and Bruce starts doing push ups.
Batman is shown to be blamed for killing police officers and Harvey Dent, and when the police have him surrounded, with guns drawn, he mounts his bat bike, arms the weapons systems, shoots at a truck to create a makeshift ramp and just drives off of it with the police firing a single shot.
The Talia reveal was really rushed and we don't get a sense of the corrupted sense of justice that Ra's has. Here it seems like she's just trying to blow up Gotham because it was her father's final wish. And it turns out that Bane is just going along with it because he loves her.
Officer Blake is likeable enough but kind of unneeded. I felt his reveal as Robin again, was forced.
Bruce Wayne moving past his personal pain and leaving the Batman mantle was way out of character. I know the film version differs from the comics because here, Bruce wants to fight long enough to clean up Gotham and for someone who doesn't have to resort to viginalte tactics to protect Gotham. But here all the criminals have been let loose, the Harvey Dent act may be repealed, and Wayne Enterprises is up for grabs, and yet Bruce leaves it behind to live in Europe.
That all said, the action is EXCELLENT. And the film has an abundance of great moments. As I said, Bane is great in every scene, Hathaway does a great job as Catwoman, The Bat flying around looked real, and when Talia reveals her plans to Batman, he drops the voice and Bale's acting genuinely conveys the betrayal and fright Bruce is feeling. The way the film was going I thought that they were going to hang him and Blake was going to take up the mantle.
Also the scene where Alfred tears up at the funeral was pretty sad.
It's a flawed but highly enjoyable film with some excellent performances especially by Hardy, Bale, Caine, and Hathaway.

I saw it yesterday and I'm still not sure entirely what I think. I definitely liked DK and Begins better...but as to what I'd give DKR out of ten or whatever, I've yet to decide. I was pretty bored for the first half, right up until Bane took over the city. A lot of the points Gerald hits on I agree with, things like the speedy romances and ham-fisting 'Robin' in at the end. Nolan was always so adamant about not having robin, why cram it in there so clumsily right at the end?
As with DK, the villain was more interesting than the lead character. I thought it ironic that after all the hoopala with Bane's voice, I understood everything he said fine and yet there were times Batman and Gordon spoke I completely missed what they said.
I've probably got more complaints I could rattle off, but ultimately I just wasn't as entertained and I expected to be. I did like the twist with Talia because I didn't see it coming, although it was fairly obvious the woman (whose name escapes me) was going to betray Batman before the end of the film.
Maybe a 5/10. 6 if I'm feeling generous, but more likely 5 because after the opening scene I was bored until the No Man's Land stuff started.
