Apparently young Dan'l Clowes has a museum exhibition of his artwork coming up. Unfortunately it's a couple thousand miles away so I can't attend.

Oddly though, I was just thinking about Mr. C last night. I was browsing through old Harvey Comics covers (don't ask why) and I noticed a strong resemblance between their art and that of Dan Clowes. For example, here is the cover to Harvey Comics Hits #59:

As you may or may not recall, Dan got his start drawing "The Uggly Family" for CRACKED:

And he later continued many of the same themes in Eightball:

Although Dan'l was born in 1961, a perusal of Harvey books from the 1950's shows a marked influence on the future Oscar-nominee's style.

Edit Reason: sigh... eventually I'll get the hang of embedding images...

Good stuff, Ted! I did not know about Clowes' Cracked work! And that Harvey cover is a trip! I love the salivating fish! And the gal turning invisible underwater!

He did a parody of the main Harvey characters, so I don't doubt a random reprint or old Harvey issue made its way into his hands.

Yes, I remembered his Harvey parody. But I was amazed at how much the '50s Harvey non-bigfoot comics bore a resemblance to his early body of work.
