JB has ordered SHIELDS UP! at the John Byrne Forum.

If this was intended to spare himself the mockery and derision of the outside world, it may have come 10 years too late.

I've got friends who are members of the JBF strictly to act as moles -- to amuse themselves with his endless, nonsensical rants and to occasionally poke at the bear. Hopefully, they'll let me know what Byrne is doing now that the door's finally closed. The mind boggles.

Actually, now that I think about it, I have to wonder how many of Byrne's dwindling pack of followers are there sincerely and how many are there for the chuckles.

Remind me again, who's supposed to be the bigger jerk here? The guy who sticks to his own little corner of the intertubes and spouts off his nonsense or the guy who's not content to just let the first guy stew in his own juices?

I think Byrne has a right to privacy. But to have a public forum and want privacy there isn't really the place to expect to exercise that right.

I don't see why we just can't all be jerks.

Some are born Jerks, others must become Jerks.

Now it can be told: Bitten by a radioactive jerk, young Lawson gained the proportionate powers of a jerk and now protects the world as ... JERK MAN!!!

For all these years, Byrne complained about people mocking his public comments because he thought he was getting an unfair rap (what he dismissed as "bad Byrne stories"). He doesn't think he's the jerk everyone else does.

But -- to his credit, I suppose -- I never noticed him whine about people quoting him from his Web site. He seemed to understand that comments he posted about whatever -- Steve Irwin, other comics pros, Latinas with blonde hair -- was going to be circulated around the Interwub.
