SDCC - DC NEW WORLDS ORDER PANEL - Saturday, July 28, 2007
BY BRUCE MacINTOSH

There were so many DC creators crammed on stage at the DC New Worlds Panel that one audience member jokingly asked if the comics line would go on if a major Crisis occurred in that room. The even continued to highlight in rapid-fire fashion some of the things that readers can expect in the near future for the DC Universe.

The group included Dan DiDio (Executive Editor); Bob Wayne (VP Sales, working the slides); Jann Jones (Coordinating Editor); Mike Carlin (Editor); Eddie Berganza (Editor of several "team" books); Nicola Scott (artist for Birds of Prey); Gail Simone (writer, Wonder Woman); Paul Dini (writer, Countdown); Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Grey, Adam Beechen and who knows who else who is working on Countdown; Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League writer); Dan Jurgens (artist); Kurt Busiek (writer of Superman); Carlos Pacheco (artist of Superman); Ivan Reis (artist on Sinestro Corps); Geoff Johns (writer, Sinestro Corps) Greg Rucka (writer, Checkmate and the new Crime Bible limited series);

Is Johns the only one who could fix the Doom Patrol? "I'd love to see Grant (Morrison) do it again."

Is Superman going to be continuing to be portrayed as a wimp, because of his relative inaction during Amazons Attack? Eddie Berganza says, "We've gone 70 years without everything being resolved in one page, so just stick with it."

Where is Krypto? Berganza said, "Superman has been looking for Krypto, which is why he doesn't do much in Amazon Attacks." We'll find out in two weeks why Supes can't find man's best friend.

Adam Beechen is doing Countdown to Adventure, which follows up with Animal Man, Starfire & Adam Strange, after 52.

Greg Rucka is doing the Crime Bible. "The people in the DCU should be very afraid of the people who follow this religion." The new Question (Rene Montoya) will play a big part.

Jimmy Palmiotti is resuming work with Justin Gray on the new Freedom Fighters 8-issue series.

Gail Simone, who was Judo Master, and will we see much of her again? "Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to get too deeply into the character." However, Geoff Johns says that she will appear in the Justice Society of America soon.

Because of all the character deaths in the DCU, one audience member gave Dan DiDio a "Dan DiDio Must Die!" T-Shirt.

According to Jann Jones, the Black Canary Wedding Planner is "the most girly book ever." Dwayne McDuffie is doing the Justice League Wedding Special. Paul Dini is doing the bachelor party in Countdown, involving Pied Piper and Trickster – who are handcuffed together.

There are, indeed, plans for the entire Marvel Family, including Freddie and Mary.

What will be different for Justice League now that Dwayne McDuffie is on Justice League? He couldn't say who would be on the roster. However, they will be featuring an Injustice League.

Checkmate #18-20 is called "The Fall of the Wall", and the Suicide Squad is heavily involved.

Speedy will be appearing in the Teen Titans special, even though she was not on the cover.

According to DiDio, Manhunter will continue to come out when they get a few more issues in the can, so that it can come out on a regular basis.

Crime Syndicate from Earth-3 is still in the Antimatter Universe. The Golden Age Crime Syndicate is what is appearing from the "new" earth-3.

Judd Winick and Ian Churchill are doing the new Titans East series.

Booster Gold by Geoff Johns. Takes place six weeks after 52 #52, and Booster is pretty full of himself for "saving the universe 52 times." Dan Jurgens will be doing the art.

Tangent Global Decree is a new book by Dan Jurgens, which will carry on into Final Crisis.

Most of the villains are being rounded up in Salvation Run and shipped off to another planet, and they will have their hands full dealing with opponents of their own (and each other).

Gary Frank will be doing Superman in Action Comics. Geoff Johns says the arc is called "Superman and the Legion of Superheroes", where Supes goes to the future to find out what happened to these folks he worked with when he was super-teenager. (That's why he has a Legion flight ring on the promo.) This will involve the "original" Legion, according to Johns.

Carlos Pacheco will be bringing back Arrowsmith (with Kurt Busiek), and it will be "full of action".

Now that Gail Simone is doing Wonder Woman, the heroine will "kick a lot of ass, and blow a lot of minds". It will feature shorter arcs to start with.

A lot will be made of Firestorm's ending (jumping into a boomtube) and the resolution of this story will be featured in Countdown in the near future.

In his spare time, Johns would like to do a Rogues series.

Booster Gold will be jumping around in time in his new series, and will visit many favorite characters in his journeys, including Ted Kord, Jonah Hex and Barbara Gordon Batgirl.

Paul Dini will be on Detective Comics throughout the next year. Stories will include villains like Scarface.

Both Johns and McDuffie are amenable to having another JLA/JSA crossover… so it should happen sometime in the future.

What will happen to Ryan Choi if they find Ray Palmer? Simone has no idea what is going on with Ray Palmer, but Dan DiDio says, "Ryan Choi is here to stay." Simone did say that one of the Big Three will be appearing in The All-New Atom. Simone would not say which of the Big Three, but hinted that "she kicks a lot of ass, and blows a lot of minds."

Sean McKeever is taking over writing Birds of Prey after Simone leaves and Nicola Scott is enjoying drawing it. Regarding the Teen Titans, he said, "If there is a teen character you like in the DC Universe, chances are they'll be appearing" in the book.

Grant Morrison dropped in to assure us that everything that happens in Countdown is counting down to a resolution in Final Crisis. He promises that Final Crisis will, indeed, be the final crisis. Contrary to my last DC article, it turns out that Morrison said that the last page of the last issue of Final Crisis, naturally, will feature Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth.

Darkseid will be appearing throughout many titles in the DCU. He is an important character for the next year.

If I promise to be really, really good, will someone make Dan DiDio stop doing photo-ops, public appearances, editorials, etc.? Hate is a very bad thing, and so I've been trying very hard to REDUCE my hate of Dan DiDio, not INCREASE it...

It's hard to tell from the pic at the top, Matthew, but the shirt that Dan is triumphantly posing in, is the "Dan DiDio Must Die" shirt that the audience member had just given him. It was a funny takeoff of the orange "Jimmy Olsen Must Die" Countdown promo. Instead of Jimmy's head, it was a caricature of Dan's shiny noggin looking up with a worried look. The irony comes from the fact that he keeps killing off many fans' favorite characters.

Just thought you'd find that funny, given your comment about Dan's tendency to appear "self"-promoting! [Smile]

Ugh. Well, it doesn't help that much. He's just so overstayed his welcome in the spotlight.

Sigh.
