Countdown #27 "Disaster and Command D" BY "FREE" STEVE CHUNG Previously in Countdown #27, the grandson of Mister Blank got a firsthand view at what the world could one day become. In an uncertain future, what are the possibilities for young Master Blank?
In one possible future, Earth is transformed into a barren wasteland by the Great Disaster, with its people little more than beast-men.
Raised by his grandfather, the boy named Kamandi (for "Command D") travels across what used to be North America, and is now a series of feudal city-states.
The East is ruled by Great Caesar and the tiger-men, while Czar Simian and his gorillas control much of the West.
Some animals, such as Dr. Canus, are trusted friends, but most remain hostile.
Although known as the "Last Boy on Earth," Kamandi is not the sole human left.
One such human is Ben Boxer, who would share his friend's desire to restore mankind to its former status.
In another possible future, where the Great Disaster does not occur, the young boy is also in the "Command D" bunker. After the death of his grandfather Buddy Blank, he is found by General Horatio Tomorrow of the Space Planeteers.
The boy is sent to an orphanage beneath a dome on an asteroid, but his intelligence and scientific aptitude impresses the general, who adopts him.
He attends Spaceport, the "West Point" of the Planeteers from which he graduates with honors, and rises to the rank of colonel.
After a time, he is teamed up with Captain Brent Wood, who is his partner on several missions.
At first, they explore their native solar system, but as exploration reaches other systems, they bring law and order to the other worlds. Eventually, Tommy Tomorrow and Brent Wood volunteer for exploration, as well.
The career of Tommy Tomorrow is a distinguished one and he is decorated many times over. His adventures become the example of what a Planeteer can accomplish, and his legend has reached the 25th Century.

I think both Kamandi and Tommy Tomorrow deserve the Showcase treatment! I remember some Tommy Tomorrow stories where he meets Supergirl; I think they were reprints in "Superman Family". And Kamandi is long overdue for some non-Archive reprints!
