HOBBS TAKES INDY HIT ONLINE AFTER LONG HIATUS
Kokomo, IN – June 23, 2008 – Writer/creator Eric Hobbs has decided to follow the lead of other independent creators, serializing his comic book AWAKENINGS for free online.
Initially released in 2005, the sci-fi thriller debuted to critical acclaim but modest sales. AWAKENINGS continued for four issues before it was forced into hiatus when it became financially impossible for Hobbs to continue publishing the title.
“It was heartbreaking,” Hobbs said. “We had a book people were really starting to get behind, but I was in way over my head. Within months I couldn’t pay the bills. I had debt collectors calling my house. It was a terrible time.”
Hobbs pushed forward, however, vowing to pay the creators on AWAKENINGS and each of the bills he’d accrued in his time as a publisher.
“I wasn’t going to leave those guys hanging. I took on a second job, moved into a cheaper apartment, anything and everything I could do to get that debt paid.”
And in the time it took to pay off those debts, Hobbs watched as other self-publishers began to find a new outlet for their work online.
“Entrepreneurial creators of all kinds are moving their work to the web,” Hobbs explained. “There’s a massive audience just waiting for high-quality content. That exactly what we’re going to give them. I’m just a little wiser this time around.”
Hoping he’ll find new readers for the underground hit, Hobbs has already posted all of issue one to his website, awakeningscomic.com. He plans to make regular updates five times a week until the series is complete sometime this October.
