According to Variety as announced on March 7th, the “place to get away with it all”, Riverdale, will return for a second season on the CW. The show has built up a steady audience after initially interested reactions, and as the dark corners of the small town have been explored, the plot has thickened like a Chock’lit shake for Archie Andrews, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and more.
Variety suggests that the CW’s deal with Netflix, which places seasons of shows onto the streaming service only 8 days after said seasons end is part of the reason why it’s easy to renew a show that has been a subtle build rather than a smashing success. That sounds reasonable as streaming services become increasingly the platforms by which we watch TV in multi-screen experiences rather than during traditional broadcast hours.
Either way, I’m happy to see Riverdale coming back, as a show that’s become at first a guilty pleasure, then simply a fairly wide fan community I am part of along with many others.
Riverdale airs on the CW on Thursday nights at 9PM.
