Fear For Rome – A First Look At Valiant’s Finished Art For Britannia: We Who Are About To Die #1
by Staff
Valiant’s new series of Britannia, the Roman-set mystery tale written by Peter Milligan (Shade, The Changing Man) and drawn by Juan Jose Ryp (Britannia), is arriving on April 26th. We’ve seen the line art on the book, showing off Ryp’s amazing linework, but now Valiant have released a preview of the lettered and colored pages so we can get a full sense of the new four-issue prestige format series, titled “We Who Are About To Die“.
This new story is set in Rome, where the god Apollo seems to be striking down citizens, and bringing the god Nero’s most trusted “detectioner,” Antonius Axia, has to figure out why blood sacrifices in a temple are connected to the bloodsport of the gladiatorial arena. Featuring female gladiator and social leader Achillia, who is fighting to gain her freedom, the series also explores the lives of the women of Rome, who are suppressed by their husbands and fathers. People are seeing visions of a “blood-soaked Apollo walking the city” and it seems like a “deadly curse” has fallen on the city. What can Antonius Axia do to quell this unrest?

Britannia: We Who Are About To Die will feature covers by Cary Nord (X-O Manowar, Conan), David Mack (Daredevil), Adam Gorham (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe), and Dave Johnson (100 Bullets).

Since the original series of Britannia with the same creative team went back to print ten times, it’s a good bet that this is a stellar series. Get on board in April and avoid the re-print waits.
