‘Strange And Genuinely Scary Experiences’ – Preview Winnebago Graveyard #1

by Staff

Winnebago Graveyard, a new Image Comics series created by Steve Niles and Alison Sampson is arriving this June and it promises to be an occult roadtrip like no other. Set in rural America, uncovering the acts of a mysterious satanic cult from the perspective of one family who wandered into the wrong town, Winnebago Graveyard is pretty much a terrifying comic.
We previously interviewed Alison Sampson here on Comicon.com and she had lots to say about her horror influences, as well as the back up materials in each issue about Satanism and horror films.
Sampson commented in our interview:

The real world offers some of the most strange and genuinely scary experiences, so we go to an alternate reality of that place (to some extent, even in a horror book where one is depicting the worst, we still don’t get close to the truly terrible things *real* people do to each other). The fact that the adults in our story aren’t white, in the USA, also adds to their sense of discomfort in an unfamiliar place. What people really do might be stranger and worse than one ever could imagine. Who ARE these people? What are they doing, and how ‘other’ can they be?

In Winnebago Graveyard #1, we meet an American family traveling on vacation, who find themselves stranded in a small town with a “sinister secret”. You’ll encounter creepy fairgrounds, nefarious characters, seedy conspiracies, towns full of satanists, and more. You’ll notice a definite 70’s horror film influence and plenty of tradition being drawn on by Niles and Sampson, all while making this series entirely new and unpredictable.
