ComiXology Announces New Set of Trading Cards for SDCC Including Kevin Smith’s ‘Heavy Hitters’

ComiXology, an area of the Internet where I’ve spent way too much money, has announced its promotional giveaway for this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Keeping with the tradition begun at last year’s SDCC, they’re giving away the third series of Comic Book All Stars collectible trading cards. Each card showcases a fan-favorite creator including Jordie Bellaire, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Paul Dini, and more.
This series also introduces the first ever “Heavy Hitters” cards curated by Kevin Smith, who will be IMDb’s Comic-Con International host. (ComiXology and IMDb are both owned by Amazon.) These cards feature Smith’s top six picks of the industry’s most accomplished talent including Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, Becky Cloonan, Laura Allred, Emma Rios, and Bruce Timm.
“Comics have always been an important part of my life whether I’m reading them, writing them or selling them. And it’s the writers, artists, inkers, colorists, and letterers who are a vital part of this incredible form of storytelling,” said Kevin Smith, IMDb’s Comic-Con International host. “I’m proud to spotlight some of today’s most talented creators who are making an impact in the comics industry with these six ‘Heavy Hitters’ as part of comiXology’s All Star Trading cards for SDCC 2017.”

Fans can snag their own deck of these cards at one of ComiXology’s eleven panels during SDCC and at booth #2547. I was able to get my hands on the second series of cards at New York Comic Con last year and it’s a pretty cool piece of swag. I’m bummed to hear that this will be the last set of cards as there are certainly many more creators that could be highlighted in this fashion.
