Science, Friendship & Awesome Adventures – The Not-So Secret Society Out This Week From Boom! Studios

by Hannah Means Shannon

We’ve been hearing about The Not-So Secret Society, forthcoming from Boom! Studios, for awhile because it’s been running as free digital comics and activities online as an education-based and adventure comic created by a team of experienced comics pros and teachers.

Writing team Matthew Daley (Lantern City) and Arlene Daley call on their combined 25 years of education experience to create this “thrilling coming-of-age adventure”. Co-created by Trevor Crafts (Lantern City) and Ellen Crafts, and illustrated by Wook Jin Clark (Adventure Time: The Flipside), The Not-So Secret Society is an all-ages adventure that “celebrates the value of teamwork and lifelong friendships”.

Madison, Dylan, Emma, Aidan, and Ava have pretty normal lives for a group of 12-year-olds: They go to school, participate in extracurricular activities, and oh yeah, they also have AWESOME ADVENTURES.
Together they form “The Not-So Secret Society”. But when they invent a candy-making machine for their school’s annual science fair, things don’t go according to plan . . . and their candy creation comes to life and escapes, threatening to destroy the entire city.

This highly inclusive book, representing a diverse cast of characters, fills a much-needed gap in comics reading material for those upper elementary/beginning middle-schoolers that engages with the sciences and with social themes while being an entertaining encouragement toward literacy.

The print OGN of this comic reaches shops this week on July 26th, and it’s a perfect choice for parents, teachers, and everyone with young people in their lives to check out and consider buying. There are also on-line components to make for a multi-media experience.
Here’s a further look at the interior art on the OGN:

The Not-So Secret Society lands in shops on Wednesday, July 24th.
