Hemlock Grove’s Penelope Mitchell Joins Hellboy Reboot
by Erik Amaya
Deadline reports Hemlock Grove‘s Penelope Mitchell will join the Hellboy reboot as Ganeida. They describe the character as “an elder witch who has decided that Nimue’s wrath has gone on for too long and must be stopped.”
Based on the figure from Celtic mythology and Arthurian legend, she also appeared in the pages of Hellboy around the time the title character and Nimue came into conflict. She helped some of his friends, though offered little in terms of long term hope for the world as Hellboy seemed closer than ever to fulfilling his destiny.
Nimue is, of course, the Blood Queen of the projects former subtitle, “Rise of the Blood Queen,” and will be played by Milla Jovovich. Other castmembers include David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm and Sasha Lane as Alice. The BPRD character Ben Daimio will also appear in the film, but the role is currently open following the departure of actor Ed Skrein. Responding to accusations of Hollywood whitewashing, he chose to step aside so an actor of Asian origins could play Daimio.
Also, if not entirely clear before, the film will be taking its cues from more recent Hellboy stories like The Wild Hunt, The Storm and The Fury. In those tales, Hellboy is no longer a member of the BPRD, but still confronting the supernatural as all the mystical creatures on Earth still expect him to do what he was created to do: usher in the Apocalypse. The project was originally meant to be a continuation of the Hellboy film series initiated by director Guillermo del Toro, but eventually evolved into a reboot project.
Hellboy comes to theaters in 2018.
