Blue Lagoon: The Awakening‘s Brenton Thwaites (who also appeared in Gods of Egypt and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) will be the new face of Dick Grayson in DC’s upcoming streaming series, Titans.
Deadline reports the actor will take the lead role in the series, joining previously announced actors like Anna Diop as Starfire and Teagan Croft as Raven. According to the report, Grayson — never identified with a hero name — will emerge “from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes.”
Grayson will of course be familiar to generations as the sensational character find of 1940; appearing alongside Batman for decades as sidekick Robin before striking out on his own as Nightwing in the 1980s. He also led the Teen Titans in several incarnations, including a current post-Flashpoint group comprised of his original friends Barry Allen, Donna Troy, Roy Harper and Garth.
Of course it is interesting to note that the character is not referred to by either of his superhero identities. Though DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff John’s referred to him as “Batman’s former protege” in a statement, he avoided mentioning Robin or Nightwing. How this will play out in the Titans series is anyone’s guess.
The series was developed by Johns, Arrowverse vets Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, and Batman and Robin screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. It is slated to debut on DC’s forthcoming streaming service in the next year.
