Tradewaiting – September 13th, 2017 Releases

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to come out in trade or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of September, 13th.

HIGHLIGHTS

Legends Of The Dark Knight: Jim Aparo Vol. 3

One of the iconic Batman artists and a defining force of the Caped Crusader’s Bronze Age adventures, Jim Aparo’s Batman books continue to be catalogued in this hardcover series, but, even if you haven’t picked up the first two installments, there’s reason to change your tune about this one.

Though Aparo came to the Batman franchise on The Brave And The Bold, by this point, he was also doing interior work on Detective Comics and drawing covers for all kinds of books. As such, inside you’ll find stories of Batman wanted for murder, a team-ups with Ra’s al Ghul and the Robin of Earth-2, the fondly remembered mini-series The Untold Legend of Batman, and stories from classic writers such as Mike Barr, Gerry Conway, Denny O’Neil, and the dearly departed Len Wein.

The evolving state of comic publishing means that many of these Bronze Age stories have rarely or never been collected, putting them out of the reach or sight of many fans, but collections like this are a great way to discover a new side of familiar characters and get some art appreciation in while you do it.

Saucer Country

Published by Vertigo Comics in 2012, Saucer Country follows the Democratic frontrunner for President, Governor Arcadia Alvarado. She’s got a campaign to run, a state to oversee, an ex to deal with, and an unwavering certainty that she was abducted by aliens.

The brainchild of Paul Cornell and Ryan Kelly, Saucer Country explored one of our most persistent modern fascinations while building a shadowy political web and ran for fourteen issues before ending, done but not finished.

Four years later, IDW Entertainment announced that they had acquired the rights to complete the story, launching Saucer State earlier this year. Even better, this week they’re rereleasing the entire run of Saucer Country in a single trade paperback! Cornell is a fantastic writer that we don’t see nearly enough of and Saucer Country is just the kind of wild, enjoyable idea that really shines in collection. And at $29.99, though not necessarily cheap, you’re getting quite a lot of comic for not a lot of money.

Saucer State is about to go on hiatus for a few months. Might be the perfect time to get caught up…

Empowered Deluxe Edition Vol. 3

Adam Warren’s Empowered is one of my favorite superhero comics. Whether you love it for its brilliant characterization, its unique brand of comedy, or its abundant cheese and beefcake, Empowered is a treat, and a beautiful one too. So especially if you haven’t picked up volumes 7, 8, or 9, this oversized reprinting of all three volumes is a wonderful addition to your comics library.

Collecting some of the series darkest and most emotional moments, this third Deluxe Edition pits Emp against a horde of chauvinist ninja, the forces of Hell(?), the entirety of the suprahuman underworld, and her own self-image. Offering close looks at one of the best supporting casts in comics and some of Emp’s nastiest villains, this $60 hardcover is an easy recommendation to Empowered fans.
