Discover The Work Of Felipe Nunes In OGN Dodo From Boom! Studios
by Hannah Means Shannon
Boom! Studios have revealed another upcoming graphic novel for May 2018 in the all-ages vein, this time dealing with a young girl facing the fallout from her parent’s divorce who develops her own imaginative magic in response.
Dodo is both written and illustrated by Felipe Nunes, who Boom describes as a “protégé of award-winning brothers Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá (Daytripper)”. Those who follow international comics may know Nunes from his previously published work in Brazil. Dodo was also originally published in Brazil, but appears in English for the first time this May.
Nunes says:
DODO is a story I made for children, like me, who grew up with divorced parents, spent hours in front of the TV, and learned to deal with loneliness. We always find a way to fill in the empty spaces in our lives, even if it’s with a strange companion that might not exist outside of our own minds.
In Dodo, Laila is confused by changes in her life, and misses her father. She befriends a strange bird who lives in the park near her house. The bird, Ralph, takes her on a journey that changes her view of the world.
Fabio Moon comments:
DODO is a sensitive fable about childhood and solitude that shows how often we end up walking fantastic paths to deal with reality.
Editor Whitney Leopard adds:
DODO takes on the hardship of divorce and looks at it through the lens of a child’s eye—Laila’s sense of wonderment, curiosity, and imagination are on full display. When Fábio and Gabriel first brought this book to our attention, we were instantly moved by its realism but charmed by its whimsy.
You’ll find Dodo for sale in May 2018 at local comic book shops, booksellers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore.
