Cracking Christmas Comics: A Guide To Comics This Holiday Season

by Olly MacNamee

With the release of several holiday themed comics this week already, I thought it wise to offer you a selection of comics for this festive season, starting with a fair few titles that were out last week that you may have missed:

Klaus and the Crisis In Christmasville #1 – Out now from Boom! Studios
Eisner Award-winning creator Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman) and Russ Manning Award winner Dan Mora (Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers) reunite for a brand-new Klaus Special! An evil Santa from an alternate dimension has founded an evil soda corporation that uses Christmas and Santa as a marketing tactic to build their fortunes. Only Klaus can defeat the Pola Cola Corp and the zombie-like Santas that are in the evil Santa’s thrall.

DC Universe Holiday Special 2017 #1 – out now from DC Comics
DC Comics’ finest talents have assembled to bring you a holiday special like you’ve never seen before! Join Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash as they deliver powerful messages of hope like only The Worlds Greatest Super-Heroes can! Plus: Sgt. Rock fights the Nazis on Hanukah, the Teen Titans take on the literal ghost of Christmas past, and Swamp Thing battles that creeping feeling of existential dread! And don’t miss the legendary Denny O’Neil’s return to comics with an all-new Batman story!

Betty & Veronica Friends Winter Annual Digest #257 – out now from Archie Comics
In the brand-new lead story ‘Girls On Tour,’ Mr. Lodge gives Betty, Veronica, Ginger, and Nancy a winter tour of the Lodge Estate-but no one could predict all of the chilly calamities that ensue!

The Wicked And The Divine Christmas Annual #1 – out now from Image Comics
Jamie said “It’s a shame we never saw any of the gods’ early funtimes,” and Kieron said “Yeah,” and then they looked at each other, and then called all their talented friends to do a Christmas album of (mostly) fan service! Inanna and Baal getting it on! Lucifer and Sakhmet getting it on! Dionysus giving Baphomet a lift in a crappy car! And more! This one has it all. From writer Kieron Gillen and art from Kris Anka, Chynna Clugston Flores, Carla Speed McNeil, Rachael Stott, Emma Vieceli and Matt Wilson .

Faith’s Winter Wonderland Special #1 – out now from Valiant Entertainment
Eisner Award and Russ Manning Award-nominated artistic sensation Marguerite Sauvage (FAITH, Shade the Changing Girl) takes the helm for a fanciful tale of Faith Herbert’s very first holiday extravaganza! As cheer fills the air, Faith ‘Zephyr’ Herbert is about to take a trip down the rabbit hole…and into a mind-bending winter wonderland where every day is something special! But hiding behind the tinsel, all is not what it seems… White rabbit meets red-nosed reindeer as Faith squares off against a realm of make-believe and merriment for a whimsical flight of superhero fancy, featuring the electrifyingly beautiful artwork of Marguerite Sauvage – one of the fastest rising stars in comics today!
And now onto some future releases starting with next week’s 2000AD, a 100 page bumper issue just in time for the holidays, and capping off an amazing year for this anthology comic that celebrated it’s 40th in style throughout this year in London, Enniskillen, Leeds and beyond. And, I was proud to be a part of that celebration too, in some small part. Thanks guys, it’s was a blast. Here’s to another 40 years of thrill-power overload!

Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse Christmas Special – out Wednesday 20th December from IDW
All is not well in the far north. As the Arctic slowly melts, automation increases, and labor costs go through the roof, CEO Claus is under increasing pressure to answer to his stockholders and his lenders. Rebellion is in the air and only Wormwood can potentially come in to help-and hopefully not bugger it up too much.
You saw him take on the U.S. Government, now it’s time for Wormwood to tell if Santa’s been nice… or naughty.
I saw Wormwood killing Santa Claus! Underneath the mistletoe last night!
More Wormwood already? It’s a corpse-mas miracle!

Hellboy: Krampusnacht #1 – out Wednesday 20th December from Dark Horse Comics
The only thing more exciting than pitting Hellboy against this Satanic spin on Santa is the team-up of Mike Mignola and Adam Hughes.
