Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency Faces The Case Of Cancellation
by Erik Amaya
Despite a stellar cast, fun plotting and the inspiration of Douglas Adams, BBC America has cut Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency from its lineup, according to Variety.
The series stared Samuel Barnett as the titular detective, who used his stated belief that “everything is connected” to solve crimes. Elijah Wood played his sometimes reluctant cohort Todd. The first season saw the pair solving a missing persons case which turned out to be a time travel murder gone awry. The second delved into why Gently was so unique.
Besides Barnett and Wood, the series also featured Hannah Marks as Todd’s sister Amanda, a woman with an extreme form of hypochondria, Jade Eshete as Gently and Todd’s muscle, Farah, and Fiona Dourif as Bart, a holistic assassin. The show also featured Mpho Koaho as Ken, a person Bart intended to kill, but comes to befriend, and Wynonna Earp‘s Michael Eklund as an emotional vampire.
The cast and range of wild storytelling made the show fun, but failed to capture the kind of audience BBC hoped to attract. I have to admit it was far easier to binge the first season on Hulu than make an appoint with Syfy or the Syfy Now app to keep up with the second season.
If nothing else, do yourself a favor and watch the first season. It’s definitely worth your time.
