Diamond have released information about the best-selling comics and graphic novels for the month of December 2017, and also, this morning, for the year of 2017 as a whole, all of which should prove pretty enlightening to see how trends are shaping up for publishers entering 2018.
Unsurprisingly, if you have chatted much with retailers in recent months, DC Comics has done very well in capturing fan interest and sales in the month of December 2017, and while Marvel has been experiencing a bit of a downturn, they are still ranking with a number of books on the comics market in December. We also have a strong showing from Image Comics in comics and books and Dark Horse Comics when it comes to book sales.
As for the best selling comics and graphic novels of 2017, also listed below, you’ll find that Marvel have commanded a surprising level of attention for the year as a whole, and that Image Comics are leading the charge when it comes to books.

That’s what we’ve got for December 2017, but what about the year of 2017 as a whole?
The big headlines from the year are that Marvel Legacy #1 is the Bestselling Comic Book of the Year and Marvel Comics is the Top Comic Book Publisher of the Year. DC Comics has ranked #2 publisher, and cornered 5 of the top 10 comic books of the year. Image Comics has been named #3 publisher, and “dominates” the graphic novels chart with 8 out of the top 10 titles.
That’s somewhat surprising, particularly in terms of Marvel, and also shows a bigger gain for Image than we might have expected from looking just at December 2017. That summer sales market must have left quite an impression on outcomes.
