Maureen Robinson Sets The Tone In Lost In Space Teaser

by Erik Amaya

Lost in Space is coming to Netflix in April. And when it does, it will introduce a new generation to the Robinson family, led in this version by the great Molly Parker. If you’re not familiar with her, this teaser Netflix released today might make you a fan.

The series remixes Irwin Allen’s 1960s remix of Swiss Family Robinson with Parker starring as Maureen Robinson, the matriarch of a family sent to colonize a new world. Unfortunately for them, their trajectory is sabotaged by Dr. Smith (Parker Posey in this update) leaving the Space Family Robinson hopelessly lost in space.
I’ll be honest, I’ve been distantly interested in this one until I head word that Posey would be playing Smith. Originally portrayed by the late Jonathan Harris, Smith’s catty quasi-antagonist was the chief reason to watch reruns of the original program. Of course, he wasn’t always catty. In the its first black-and-white season, he was more of a threat, but as the show shifted to color and a lighter tone, his catchphrase “Oh, the pain of it all” became one its hallmarks. And, as it happens, Posey’s ability with catty characters makes her the only person working today who could possibly play Smith.
But Parker as Maureen is another indication that the show isn’t a quick-and-easy gritty reboot. I definitely cannot wait to see what the new Lost in Space will be like when it hits Netflix on April 13th.
