Tradewaiting – April 4th, 2018 Releases: Returns To The Past And Escapes From The Future

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to be published as a trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.
So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of April 4th, 2018.
HIGHLIGHTS
Redlands vol. 1
You know what’s boring? Recasting traditionally villainous figures as heroes without consideration of the context that why they were hated. You know what’s worse? Ridgidly allowing old patterns to limit us into reading the same five stories with the same three protagonists. You know what fixes both of those problems? Redlands!
Image has proven that a horror book about witches has legs and there’s plenty of demand for empowered badass witches telling patriarchy to go screw itself, but Redlands is a more complicated and, in this case, interesting view of deviancy and order.
After taking control of a Florida town in the late 70s, a coven of witches finds themselves hunted by both the anti-establishment tide of the information age, as well as the misogynist backslide that has come with it. It’s horror and drama, and a gripping crime comic that should have your attention for either the concept or the art alone. Putting Jordie Bellaire and Vanesa Del Rey together on a book is almost guaranteed to be gorgeous and Redlands doesn’t disappoint with its flat, moodily lit ‘Everglades gothic’ atmosphere. Add to that the chance to see Jordie Bellaire’s writing debut and the unusually quiet yet purposeful story that she has chosen to tell and you’ve got a book that deserves a look. Plus, as an Image volume 1, six issues of Redlands will only cost you $10. It’s a low cost investment that will be be a fantastic piece of sequential art at worst, but could easily be the book you can’t believe you weren’t reading before.
The Flash by Mark Waid, Book Four
Mark Waid’s run on The Flash is fondly remembered with good reason, but, there are really two stories that are stand out as titans among the character’s history, and the second is collected here. Half of this book’s twelve (fourteen if you count double-sized issues twice) comics are devoted to Waid’s legendary “Terminal Velocity” arc. This is it: the first proper appearance of Impulse, the introduction of the Speed Force, and one of the most romantic comic moments of the 90s. It’s great stuff and the sizable format of these collections allows Waid to frame the story in the appropriate context. As if that weren’t enough, this also includes one of Waid’s favorite stories from his run, the “Zero Hour” tie-in “Flashing Back” in Flash #0.
At $34.99, The Flash by Mark Waid Book Four is neither particularly expensive for what it is, nor a massive savings. However, having collected “Terminal Velocity” in singles myself before these collections were announced, I can confidently say that, unless you’re in it for the hunt, you’re saving enough time and money to make it worth your while. The Flash would never be quite the same after this and you don’t need a cosmic treadmill to journey back experience it for yourself anymore.
X-Men: Grand Design vol. 1
X-Men Grand Design is a unique kind of comic and one that I wish we’d see more of. Synthesizing and building upon an incredible number of stories and comics, Grand Design reimagines the origin of the X-Men into a stylish and comprehensive single narrative. Bearing all the distinctive flair of writer/artist Ed Piskor’s Hip-Hop Family Tree, Grand Design provided something very strange and wonderful upon its release and now the first two issues have been collected into the same scaled-up format as Hip-Hop Family Tree along with a recolored reprint of X-Men #1 to compare against.
Admittedly it’s a bit of a steeper ask at $29.99 for three comics, especially when, given time, the remaining issues will be released and eventually collected into a more complete edition. Nevertheless, if you’re regretting passing it up or want to catch up before the next chapter drops, this is an enhanced way to enjoy this surprising hit from Marvel.
