Rat Queens Goes Cyberpunk In Neon Static One-Shot This July

by James Ferguson

The sprawling and humorous fantasy comic Rat Queens is about to make the jump to a very different land indeed. This July, Image Comics and Shadowline will release Rat Queens Special: Neon Static, a one-shot where our group of adventurers will go to an alternate and futuristic world.

Written by Kurtis J. Wiebe and illustrated by Will Kirkby, Rat Queens Special: Neon Static follows the gang as they take to the neon streets of Palisade as an elite team of shadow operatives. They’re the only ones who can stop an anonymous fiend who’s been creeping through the dark web, stealing identities and blackmailing innocent civilians for cold, hard Goldyen.
Writer Kurtis J. Wiebe says:

This one shot is an opportunity to take the Rat Queens to a space that we’ve never been before.  With Will Kirkby, the Neon Static issue is unlike anything we’ve ever done before, and his artistic style is the perfect opportunity to experiment with any wild ideas that come to mind. It’s all the personality you’d expect in a setting you’d never expect. Cyberpunk sass and sorcery.

I love the idea of this one-shot. It puts these familiar characters in an unfamiliar setting, mixing up genres in a fun way. Rat Queens Special: Neon Static is set for release on Wednesday, July 18th.  The final order cutoff date for comic retailers is Monday, June 25th.
