As Captain Marvel continues production in the Los Angeles, a new member of the cast has been revealed, though her part in the picture is unclear.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Annette Bening will join the cast of the Marvel Studios production. Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, a 1990s US Air Force pilot who bonds with alien DNA and becomes a hero on Earth and out in the stars. The cast includes Jude Law as Mar-vel, the first Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as the primary antagonist, Clark Gregg as Philip Coulson, Lashana Lynch as a character many assume to be Monica Rambeau — another Captain Marvel — and Gemma Chan, with Djimon Honsou and Lee Pace reprising their Guardians of the Galaxy roles as Korath the Pursuer and Ronan the Accuser.
Benings’ role is unknown beyond the implication that she will play some sort of scientist. She could, in theory, play a Kree scientist if she doesn’t mind blue makeup or maybe a S.H.I.E.L.D. researcher trying to determine Carol’s strength. As THR notes, the actor has shied away from tentpole superhero releases, but maybe she saw Glenn Close’s brief appearance in the first Guardians and decided it could be a bit of fun.
The film, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, is due out on March 8th, 2019.
