Liam Neeson In Talks To Join The New Men In Black
by Erik Amaya
It seems Liam Neeson will bring his skills to Sony’s new Men in Black.
According to Variety, the actor is in talks to portray the British head of the the Men in Black. In the original film, Rip Torn played a similar role as Zed, the chief agent of New York’ Men in Black. Agents Jay (Will Smith) and Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) worked for Zed across two of the films, but the character was said to have passed away sometime before the third film.
The new series, which stars Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth, acknowledges the prevision films while charting its own tale. According to reports, Thompson will play a green agent assigned to Hemsworth’s more senior MiB. While attempting to prove her worth, a new alien menace threatens the UK and, presumably, the world. The film will be directed by Fate of the Furious‘s F. Gary Gray.
Both the new and old film series are based on the short-lived Malibu Comics series by Lowell Cunningham with Sandy Carruthers on art, The original three-issue series told the exploits of Agents Kay and Jay as they dealt with supernatural threats to the status quo. In a subsequent miniseries and a number of one-shots, an agent named Ecks learned the truth about the Men in Black and goes rogue with Jay and Kay on their trail. Besides the naming convention and the sleek suits, the series also introduced the neuralyzer; an important device in the film series directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
Steven Spielberg, Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, producers of the Sonnenfeld series, return as producers for the new iteration.
The new Men in Black film is set for a May 17th, 2019 release.
