‘By Crook Or By Hook’ – Explore New Brooklyn In The Red Hook Volume 1 From Image

by Hannah Means Shannon

The Red Hook: Volume 1: New Brooklyn arrives in comic shops from Image next Wednesday, June 6th, and festivities are kicking off today at Book Expo for the launch. Written and illustrated by Dean Haspiel, the comic debuted on the digital platform Line Webtoons and won the Ringo Award for best webcomic in 2017.
There’s also going to be a Summer 2018 Tour of events for the book following a Book Expo appearance by Haspiel.

The Red Hook is a “super-thief who is bequeathed the Omni-fist of Altruism and transformed into a hero against his will a year after a sentient Brooklyn’s heart is broken and physically secedes from America”. That’s a good sampling of the kind of prose that makes Haspiel’s work so distinctive, particularly when featuring heroes.
If you’re a follower of Haspiel’s work, you’ll notice an evolution of his art style in this volume, building on the Silver Age aspects you might have noticed in The Fox from Archie, but here taking in more “dry brush” approached and also an emphasis on vertical compositions drawn partly from the vertical scroll inherent in Line Webtoons comics, but also part of the increasing aerial experimentation for The Red Hook and other characters.
Here’s a chunky preview of what happens when semi-sentient Brooklyn secedes from New York City in The Red Hook:
