Creed II Trailer Reveals A Familiar Rocky Storyline

by Erik Amaya

The trailer for Creed II is finally upon us. Black Panther‘s Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed, the son Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) never knew because he died during an exhibition fight with Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in Rocky IV. Now, Adonis faces Drago’s son and if this trailer is to be believed, he will have to do it without Rocky’s (Sylvester Stallone) help.

Considering the beats the trailer hits, Creed II appears to be an amalgam of ideas covered in Rocky III and IV. In the third film, Rocky realizes he fears Clubber Lang (Mr. T) because he has a family and fortune to lose. In Rocky IV, he pushes those fears aside to take on Drago after Apollo’s death. With those things in mind, it is clear why Rocky is so hesitant to help Donny with this. He’s literally lived this life before. Which, if the film uses those connections, could lead to a worthy successor to Ryan Coogler’s extension of the Rocky story.
And while this isn’t the sort of movie we usually cover around here, I’ll admit I have a soft spot for the Rocky films and Creed. That the new movie looks good despite Coogler’s departure is a great surprise.
Creed II hits theaters on November 21st.
