by Erik Amaya
FX’s telling of Y: The Last Man has found its Yorick and Senator Brown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Diane Lane and Barry Keoghan will star in the FX’s pilot as two of the key characters from Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s Vertigo comic book series. Set in a world in which nearly all the mammals with the Y chromosome suddenly die, remaining males Yorick (Keoghan) Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand travel with a former government agent and a geneticist across the partially collapsed United States — and then the world — to find out why they survived and to discover if they can salvage the human race before almost certain extinction. Lane’s Senator Brown is Yorick’s mother.
The pilot will also feature Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield and Marin Ireland. It also represents the networks latest effort to bring Y to the screen. FX has been developing the series since 2015 with by Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Vaughan producing. All three are set to be executive producers of this latest iteration with former American Gods showrunner Michael Green set to executive produce the show should FX pick it up. The pilot will be directed by Melina Mastoukas, who will also receiving EP credit.
A film version of Y nearly happened in 2007 with D.J. Caruso set to direct and actors like Shia LaBeouf and Zachary Levi rumored for Yorick. Caruso eventually left the project as New Line Cinema wanted the story to be told in one film while the director wanted to produce a trilogy. Though New Line continued to develop the film, Vaughn announced in 2014 that the film rights reverted to himself and Guerra.
