The Giver Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary And Gets A Graphic Novel In 2019

by Christine Marie Attardo

This week brought an exciting announcement regarding one of our favorite young adult titles. One that has been timeless since its release. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Giver by Lois Lowry with a new edition, and in Spring 2019, it will be adapted into a graphic novel! It will be illustrated and adapted by Eisner and Harvey Award winner P. Craig Russell (Coraline, American Gods), and is sure to be a refreshing way to read the classic. It will also include a new foreword by Lois Lowry, so that’s something to look forward to.

Here’s the description to the classic story from Entertainment Weekly:

The Giver centers on a 12-year-old boy named Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the “Receiver of Memory” does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The best-selling phenomenon spawned three companion novels by Lowry, namely Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

I have read The Giver a few times, but am looking forward to reading this new version.

A 25th anniversary edition of The Giver will be arriving on October 2nd, and the graphic novel is currently scheduled to go on sale March 5, 2019.
