The Birds of Prey film seems to be moving closer to reality. And as it does, more details emerge — like the identity of the major antagonist.
The Wrap reports Black Mask will give the team a heap of trouble in the Cathy Yan-directed feature. Created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake, Roman Sionis was another scion of another well-to-do Gotham City family. His social-climbing parents even forced him to befriend a young Bruce Wayne. But his hatred of Gotham elite society consumed him, leading him to kill his parents and take over their cosmetics company. Unfortunately, he was a terrible at running the business and tanks its fortunes. Wayne Enterprises took over the failing business, but forced Sionis out. In his rage, he smashed his father’s coffin and formed a black mask out of the pieces; forging a new identity with which to enter the world of crime. His activities eventually brought him to the attention of Batman.
The character has appeared in episodes of animated series like The Batman and Batman: The Brave and the Bold and he was advertised as the chief antagonist of the 2013 video game Batman: Arkham Origins, though the story subsequently revealed this to be a ruse. A “Roman Sionis” also appeared in the first and second seasons of Gotham.
Margot Robbie is set to reprise her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn in the film alongside traditional members of the team like Black Canary and the Huntress with Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain reportedly rounding out the big screen Birds of Prey.
