Cowboy Ninja Viking Loses Release Date; Production Delayed

Despite nabbing Game of Thrones veteran Michelle MacLaren as a director, Chris Pratt’s adaptation of Cowboy Ninja Viking is going back to the bench one month before production was set to begin. Collider reports the project has been removed from Universal’s release calendar, though the film is still considered to be in active development.
Based on the Image Comic by A.J. Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, the graphic novel tells the tale of a counter-intelligence team which utilizes suffers of dissociative identity disorder to fashion operatives known as Triplets. Cowboy Ninja Viking, the deadliest of the program’s operatives, is called in to eliminate a rogue Triplet.
Chris Pratt will star as Cowboy Ninja Viking. Priyanka Chopra is still set to co-star, according to Deadline.
MacLaren nearly directed Wonder Woman before creatives differences saw her part ways with Warner Bros. Pictures. She is also an acclaimed director on series like Breaking Bad, where she also served as an executive producer. Her credits also include episodes of Westworld and The Walking Dead.
The project has been in development since 2014 and was on the fast track to a June 28th, 2019 release. But according to reports, Universal is quite concerned about the film as all parties involved hope to launch a franchise with it and did not want to rush into the summer 2019 release. But as that suggests a new draft will be written, it is possible MacLaren and Chopra will move on with Pratt staying attached as he is also serving as a producer. The studio has not been terribly successful with launching franchises of late. The only successes among films like R.I.P.D. and The Mummy are the Jurassic World films; themselves based on an earlier franchise and starring Pratt.
No new release date has been set for Cowboy Ninja Viking.
