No, that headline is not a typo. Starburns Industries Press has announced a new anthology project called Comics Comics. It’s a comic book written by comedians and illustrated by top notch artists with a penchant for comedy. The publisher will be launching a Kickstarter on August 20th to fund the release of the book in October 2018.
Each issue of the ongoing series will contain at least 48 pages of brand-new stories written by headliners, cult favorites, and newcomers, and drawn by artists from every facet of the comic spectrum, from alternative, to underground, to superhero.
Editor Brendan Wright says:
This series has lived in my head since I used to go to the Stumptown Comics Fest and the Bridgetown Comedy Fest on the same weekend years ago. I was struck by how much of a convention atmosphere there was at the after-hours open mics at Bridgetown, and starting this project and seeing how many comedians had favorite cartoonists they wanted to work with and how many cartoonists knew great comedians they could introduce to us made bringing together stand-up and comic books feels even more natural than I’d imagined.
Just check out this line-up of talent on board for Comics Comics. On the writing side, there’s Patton Oswalt, Paul Scheer, Sam Jay, Jackie Kashian, Quinta Brunson, Megan Koester, Sara Benincasa, Carolyn Main, Eliot Rahal, Rose Matafeo, and Nick Giovannetti. That’s just to start. More will be announced through the campaign. Starburns Industries Press gave comedians the freedom to write whatever they wanted in any genre and they clearly got a lot of folks taking them up on that offer.
On the art side, you can expect to see work from Troy Nixey, Robert Hack, Evan Dorkin, Rick Altergott, Brent Schoonover, Sarah Burrini and more. Carolyn Main will be writing and drawing in the book too. Plus, a set of Kickstarter exclusive covers are on the way from Richard P. Clark.
The Comics Comics Kickstarter will launch on August 20th and run through September 19th. Rewards include the book itself in print and digital formats, a hardcover version, prints, and other limited edition items. If you miss the book, you’ll be able to order it at your local comic shop down the line. For now, you can sign up to receive more information at ComicsComicsKickstarter.com.
