Netflix has released a trailer for the upcoming Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and based on it, the program appears to be doing everything a television show based on a horror comic (based on an Archie character) should be doing. That it is to say, it looks cool while playing with horror comic and movie tropes.
Kiernan Shipka stars as Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch/half-mortal who stands against evil forces that threaten herself, her family and conventional human types while also wrestling with her place in both worlds.
Based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Archie Comics title of the same name, the program will also feature Ross Lynch as Sabrina’s potential love interest Harvey Kinkle, with Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis as Sabrina’s aunts Zelda and Hilda, Doctor Who‘s Michelle Gomez as Sabrina’s mentor Mary Wardell, Chance Perdomo as Sabrina’s British cousin Ambrose, Tati Gabrielle as rival Prudence, Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s best friend Rosalind Walker and Bronson Pinchot as nefarious Baxter High principle George Hawthorne.
Originally intended as a “companion” series to Riverdale on The CW, the project moved to Netflix and will not have any ties to other program. The new series was teased obliquely during Riverdale‘s second season when Archie (KJ Apa) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) visited Sabrina‘s Greendale despite warnings it was not a place one wanted to be after midnight.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina debuts on October 26th.
