Batwoman’s TV Look Debuts In Elseworlds First Photo

The CW has released a first-look photo of Ruby Rose in her Batwoman gear for this year’s Arrowverse crossover, “Elseworlds.”

Based on the design created by Alex Ross — itself based on the original Silver Age Batwoman design by Sheldon Moldoff and a concept Ross developed for a new version of Batgirl —  Colleen Atwood’s version retains much of what set it apart from other Bat-costumes like the emphasis on red and black. But it also has the textured armor feel which has become so important in live-action hero uniforms. As is now typical with CW costume reveals, the use of the painted backdrop and odd pose leaves the viewer wondering if the design actually works.

Of course, that slight sense of trepidation will likely be dispelled once the costume debuts in the December crossover. Like the initial photos of Grant Gustin in the first Flash costume, these suits (except Mon-El’s black suit on Supergirl) tend to look better in motion and in the proper TV context than they do in staged and stylized photos like the one above.

Batwoman, alias Kate Kane, will debut in “Elsworlds,” but both the character and actor Ruby Rose are slated to star in their own Batwoman series from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti and The Vampire Diaries‘s Caroline Dries. The use of the “Elseworlds” term in regards to the crossover may indicate the series will occur on a separate Earth from the Earth-1 of The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow and the Earth-38 of Supergirl. No matter which parallel world she ends up on, the series will see Kate overcoming her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Nonetheless, it is clear she will be inspired to fashion a hero’s look during the events of “Elseworlds.”

“Elseworlds” begins on December 9th.
