While Joker is primarily about Arthur Fleck’s (Joaquin Phoenix) transformation into the Joker, it will feature the Waynes to some extent. Brett Cullen was cast as family patriarch Thomas Wayne about a month ago and now comes word that a young Bruce Wayne will make an appearance.
Comicbook.com reports Dante Pereira-Olso will play Bruce while Douglas Hodge will play butler Alfred Pennyworth. It is unclear how large these roles will be considering the film is explicitly not a Batman movie. Unless, of course, the film feels honor-bound to recreate the traumatic events in Crime Alley; maybe even making Arthur the trigger man as Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) was in Batman.
The report also contradicts sightings of a Batmobile on the set of Joker, unless, of course, the film features a flash forward to Joker and his arch rival in a more familiar Gotham City situation.
Described by Phoenix as a character study, the film sets out to give the Joker a definitive origin while also establishing a new sort of Black Label feel for Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC Entertainment properties. The film stands outside the studio’s superhero universe with co-writer/director Todd Phillips enjoying free rein to re-imagine the Joker to his liking. Based on photos release thus far, the interpretation looks more traditional than one would expect. But after Jared Leto’s Juggalo Joker, anything would look more traditional.
Joker opens on October 4th, 2019.
